Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. A medium size tree with a spreading, rounded dense crown and a short trunk. Can be a small multi-stemmed shrub in dry areas and more tree-like in moist cool areas. Found in moist canyons, alongside streams and in ponderosa forests.
Height: 10 to 40 feet     Width: 15 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 4700 - 7000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Bell-shaped in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - May
Description: Small in short drooping rounded clusters with thread-like stems 1 to 2 inches long. Male and female flowers on same tree.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Palmate   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Leaves are shiny and dark above, pale and finely hairy beneath. 3 to 5 blunt lobes and 2 small basal lobes on short stems. 2 to 3-1/2 inches long and wide. Has few widely spaced, rounded teeth. Turns red, orange and yellow in the autumm.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Green or Reddish   Type: Winged   Description: U-shaped, paired and long-winged seeds or keys to 1-1/4 inch long. Hairless, 1 seeded with round seed cavity. Matures in fall.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Grayish-Brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Smooth   Bark and Branch Description: Thin and smooth but develops numerous shallow furrows with age. Twigs are reddish, hairless and slender with buds having 4 pointed scales.
