Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Small round shrub with numerous short, stiff side branches. Fine textured and grey-leaved. Unlike the Ceanothus fendleri does not have spines.
Height: 5 feet, usually 1 foot     Width: 3 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 7000 feet

Similar Species: Ceanothus fendleri


Flower Characteristics

Color: White, Pink or Blue   Shape: Inconspicuous in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - May
Description: White and occasionally blue or pink in crowded clusters.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Gray-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Concave above, gray beneath, thick and leathery.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Berry-like   Description: Cluster of brown fruit with each capsule to 3/16 inch in diameter. May have horn-like or warty projections.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Grayish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Initially light gray and smooth, becoming darker and rough with age. Light gray, felt-covered bark on old branches. Young wood pinkish and felt covered.
