Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Semi-evergreen. Hardwood shrub with dense erect growth. Tends to grow in patches, especially on steep slopes throughout the upper pinon-juniper and lower ponderosa pine ecozones.
Height: 10 feet     Width: 4 to 6 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 4500 - 7000 feet

Similar Species: Cercocarpus betuloides, Cercocarpus ledifolius, Cercocarpus breviflorus


Flower Characteristics

Color: Green   Shape: Regular, not in clusters     Tubular: Y   Flowering Period: May - Nov
Description: Petal-less, with green sepals forming a tube with pinkish, flared lobes.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Gray-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Small, 1 inch long and 1/2 inch wide, wedge-shaped and toothed at upper margins.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Whitish   Type: Feathery   Description: Small slender achene with long, feathery, spirally twisted tail (up to 3 inches).


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Grayish-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Smooth   Bark and Branch Description: Twigs are slender, hairy, reddish-brown and smooth turning grey with age. Bark is grayish-brown and generally smooth.
