Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Upright with twisted, spreading crown. Can be single or multi-trunked shrub to tree-like. Moderate to rapid growth. Can be found along dry washes where they help control erosion.
Height: 25 feet     Width: 20 feet


Habitat

Elevation: 1500 - 5000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: White to pink   Shape: Irregular, not in clusters     Tubular: Y   Flowering Period: Apr - Aug
Description: Attractive, orchidlike, fragrant and showy. Tubular or funnel shaped with purple and yellow streaks inside throat. Appear in long clusters at the ends of twigs to 1-1/2 inches long.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Light-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate and opposite   Hairs: N
Description: Linear, often slightly curved to 6 inches long by 3/8 inches wide. Untoothed.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Pod   Description: Long, narrow and slightly twisted seed pods, 8 inches by 1/4 inch, containing numerous fluffy, winged seeds. May remain on branches through the winter months and may attract birds.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray to brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Gray-brown with lighter colored cracks and splits. Later develops shallow furrows and becomes scaly. Trunk diameter up to 1 foot.
