Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Slow growing widely branched woody shrub with deep roots and showy bright white flowers. Commonly found on rocky ledges and steep slopes of cliffs and canyons.
Height: 3 to 6 feet     Width: 4 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 3000 - 7000 feet

Similar Species: Philadelphus microphyllus


Flower Characteristics

Color: White   Shape: Regular, not in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Jun
Description: White and fragrant, 4 spoon-shaped petals, fringed, hairy and faintly edged in pink, 8 stamens, 2 inch wide, pinkish buds, single or in small clusters.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: N
Description: Shiny, rough, dark green above, dull green beneath, 3 prominent sunken veins, thick, elongated, opposite to 1-3/4 inches long.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Gray-green   Type: Acorn or acorn-like   Description: Four chambered, woody, acorn-like capsule to 1/2 inch long.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Brownish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Shreddy bark. New shoots have reddish stems.
