Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Long lived multi-stemmed shrub with attractive evergreen foliage with a rounded form. Found in canyons, ponderosa pine forests and mountainsides.
Height: 20 feet, common 10 feet     Width: 10 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 4000 - 7000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow-green   Shape: Regular in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: May - Jun
Description: Yellow-green with 5 joined pointed lobes, slightly hairy to 1/8 inch wide in clusters in leaf axils.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Dull green above, paler green and hairy beneath, elliptical to oval, pointed at tips, very fine toothed, thick and leathery, prominent veins beneath, edges slighty rolled under to 3 inches long on a pinkish stem.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Green, Red or Black   Type: Berry-like   Description: Shiny, juicy berries to 3/8 inch in diameter in small cluster changing from green to red to black in the fall.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Reddish-gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Smooth   Bark and Branch Description: Numerous lenticels, later splitting into very shallow fissures (still very smooth) and becoming lighter in color.
