Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Upright growth with round crown. Moderate to rapid rate. Seeds attract birds and small animals. Found in creeks, washes and canyon bottoms.
Height: 35 feet     Width: 20 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Riparian
Elevation: 2000 - 7000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellowish-white or green   Shape: Inconspicuous in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Apr
Description: Small, inconspicuous and in clusters. Male and female on different trees. Male flower is yellowish-white while female is green.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green   Type: Compound   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Pinnately compound with 5 to 9 elliptical to lance shaped leaflets each to 1-1/2 inch long. Entire leaf is 6 inches long. Leaflet margins vary from with to without teeth. Young leaves are velvety. Yellow fall color.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Creamy-white   Type: Winged   Description: Single elliptical wing, straight samara, 1 to 1-1/2 inches long, plump seed. Large hanging clusters mature in late summer.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray to brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Smooth and gray when young, develops shallow fissures and scaly ridges in an irregular diamond pattern, gray-brown. Grows up to 1 foot in diameter.
