Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Shrub but can become tree-like under favorable circumstances. Found on dry slopes.
Height: 15 feet     Width: 6 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 8000 feet

Similar Species: Garrya flavescens


Flower Characteristics

Color: Gray-green   Shape: Inconspicuous in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Aug
Description: Small, petal-less, few in number, in loose hanging tassel at twig ends.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Light Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: N
Description: Light green, 1 to 2 inches long, elliptic, rough and leathery.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Dark bluish-purple   Type: Berry-like   Description: Round and pea-size.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Brownish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Heartwood various shades of light and dark brown in an irregularly streaked pattern.
