Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Relatively small multi-branched shrub with a rounded crown of fine twigs. Found in disturbed soils and if abundant indicates land has been overgrazed.
Height: 2 feet     Width: 2 feet


Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 8000 feet

Similar Species: Gutierrezia microcephala

Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Daisy or Dandelion-like in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Jul - Dec
Description: Small golden yellow flowers in numerous flat-topped clusters at the end of branches.

Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Dark green, very narrow 1 to 3 inches long and dotted with resinous glands.
Spines: N

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Other   Description: Fruit is oval and covered with chaffy scales. A brown, dense hairy seed.

Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Brownish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Mostly non-woody except at the base. Twigs erect, thin, flexible, green to brown, hairy or smooth. Trunk short with brown bark, shreddy and smooth. Stems die back in winter giving plant a broom-like appearance.
