Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Slow growing, upright, with rounded crown and widely spreading branches. Found along watercourses.
Height: 20 to 40 feet     Width: To 45 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Riparian
Elevation: 3500 - 7000 feet

Similar Species: Sapindus saponaria drummondii and Ailanthus


Flower Characteristics

Color: Green   Shape: Other in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - May
Description: Male and female separate on same tree. Male flowers are a hanging catkin while female flowers are in an erect cluster with no petals. Blooms before or during leaf development.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green   Type: Compound   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Pinnately compound. 8 to 12 inches long with 9 to 13 lance shaped coarsely toothed leaflets 4 inches long. The last leaflet is often smaller or absent.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Nut or nut-like   Description: Round, 1-1/2 inch diameter, smooth husk, initially bright green but turning brown with inner hard shelled, deeply grooved sweet nut. Matures in fall.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray to brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Furrowed and scaly with flat topped ridges. Trunk up to 3 feet in diameter. Twigs are stout, fuzzy and initially green but turning brown.
