Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. A low-growing, long-lived shrub with woody base and numerous annual branchlets. Fluffy seed heads cover plant to make it look like an exploded pillow on the landscape.
Height: 2 feet     Width: 1.5 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 2500 - 8000 feet

Similar Species: Ceratoides latens


Flower Characteristics

Color: White   Shape: Inconspicuous in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - Jul
Description: Flowers inconspicuous with no petals,clustered in the leaf axils and wooly and white with a green stripe.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Blue-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves
Description: Woolly hairs densely cover the narrow leaves that crowd the stems.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: White to Pink   Type: Feathery   Description: Plumes of fluffy white seeds cover the female plants from September through December.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Numerous erect slender branches grow from a woody base. Twigs gray to reddish-brown, stout, ascending, and covered with dense hairs. Trunk bark is gray-brown.
