Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Coarse-textured, creeping, woody-stemmed ground cover. Good for erosion control.
Height: 1 foot     Width: 1 foot


Habitat

Plant Communities: Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 5000 - 10000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Regular in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - Jun
Description: Fragrant to 3/4 inch wide with 6 yellow petals in dense cluster.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Compound   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Dark green, shiny, leathery, holly-like to 10 inches long, pinnately compound, 3 to 7 wavy leaflets with spiny margins, leaflets to 3 inches long, leaves turn shades of red, yellow or purple in the fall.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Bluish-purple   Type: Berry-like   Description: Cluster of 1/4 inch berries.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Reddish-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Scaly and rough. Stems root when touching the ground.
