Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Upright with narrow crown, less spreading than other cottonwoods. Found along mountain streams.
Height: 30 - 50 feet     Width: 20 - 30 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Riparian
Elevation: 5000 - 7000 feet

Similar Species: Populus fremontii


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow-green   Shape: Inconspicuous in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Apr
Description: Dioecious. Narrow catkins to 3 inches long appear in early spring before the leaves.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Yellow-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Shiny and yellowish green above but paler below. Leathery with yellowish mid-vein. Lance shaped, tapering and long pointed to 5 inches long and 1 inch wide and finely saw toothed.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Light-brown   Type: Capsule   Description: Small (1/4 inch), 2-valved, dry capsule on a hanging catkin. Each capsule contains numerous small, cottony seeds.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray to gray-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Light yellow-green and smooth when young changing to gray to gray-brown and deeply furrowed on mature trees. Round greenish twigs differentiate from Populus acimunata. Trunk to 1-1/2 feet in diameter.
