Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. A thicket-forming small, shrub-like tree with low hanging branches. When undisturbed typically has one dominant trunk, but when grazed or cut back several crooked and arching stems develop into a broad round crown. Found in washes, valleys and plains.
Height: 30 feet     Width: 15 to 30 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Semidesert Grasslands
Elevation: 1000 - 5000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Irregular in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - Jun
Description: Small and fragrant in slender cylindrical clusters to 4 inches long.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green to gray-green   Type: Compound   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves
Description: A central stalk of each leaf splits into 2 stalks each with 10 - 20 leaflets. Leaflet are 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and leaves are 3 to 6 inches long. Leaflets have a slightly fuzzy texture due to short gray hairs.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Pod   Description: A 3 to 7 inch long, tubular legume, short pointed, slightly swollen at seeds, ripening in mid to late summer. Sometimes red streaked.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray to brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Need value   Bark and Branch Description: Very distinct, rough shreddy to scaly. Outer older bark is gray-brown. Newer bark is reddish-brown. Rough and separating into long narrow strips.
