Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Shrub or tree closely related to the tree-like Apache plume with a single trunk or the Antelope brush smaller with yellowish flowers. Found on dry slopes.
Height: 8 to 20 feet     Width: 10 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3500 - 8000 feet

Similar Species: Fallugia paradoxa, Purshia tridenata


Flower Characteristics

Color: White to Yellow   Shape: Regular, not in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Apr - Sep
Description: Creamy white to pale yellow, 5 petaled with gold centers to 1 inch wide, very fragrant.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Palmate   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Dark green above with white woolly hairs beneath, leathery, glandular-dotted, wedge-shaped, divided into 3 to 5 narrow lobes, edges rolled under to 1 inch long.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Other   Type: Feathery   Description: Fruit hairy 1/4 inch long achene, with 4 to 10 seeds, attached 2-inch silvery, feathery plume tail.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Green, Reddish-brown to Black   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Branches brittle with bark green to reddish-brown when young, becoming blackish, scaly and shreddy later. Wood hard and heavy.
