Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Upright form with rounded crown. Sometimes forms thickets. Occasionally reaches 50 ft. but is usually no taller than 30 ft. Found on rocky slopes.
Height: 30 feet     Width: 20 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 5000 - 8000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Inconspicuous in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: May
Description: Tiny. Male is drooping catkin while female is a short spike. Male and female flowers are on the same tree.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Dark-green and smooth above while lighter green with soft hairs below. Oblong up to 6 inches long with 7 to 11 rounded lobes. Turns brown or sometimes red in the fall.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Acorn or acorn-like   Description: Oval 3/4 inch long acorn with lower half covered by hairy scales and bowl-like cup.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Light colored in young trees. Darker and rough with fissures and deep irregular grooves when mature.
