General Description: Evergreen. A spreading, multi-branched, dense, slow growing shrub or small tree with holly-like leaves.
Height: 10 feet     Width: 5 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 7000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Green   Shape: Regular in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: May - Jun
Description: Dioecious; small, 4 triangular sepals, small cluster bloom from leaf axils.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Shiny, paler beneath, holly-like, oval to nearly round, spiny, wavy margins, leathery to 1-1/2 inches long.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Red   Type: Berry-like   Description: Bright red, 1/4 inch diameter juicy fruits in the fall.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Shallowly fissured and rough on large specimens.
