Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Large thicket forming shrub with spreading, sprawling crown for a good hedge or screen and adapts well to regular trimming. Shrub or tree with large, bright-green, leathery leaves and dense, white flower clusters.
Height: 15 feet     Width: 10 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 5000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Pink   Shape: Regular in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Feb - Mar
Description: Pinkish buds turning to cream color, 5 rounded petals to 1/4 inch wide, in crowded terminal cluster at the end of twigs to 2 inches long.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Light Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Light green, shiny, thick, leatherlike, pinkish leaf stalk, oval, short-pointed at tip, rounded at base, curved upward at midvein, up to 3-1/4 inches long.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Red   Type: Berry-like   Description: Elliptical, 1/8 inch across, fuzzy and red in clusters at the ends of twigs, ripen in late summer and persist into winter.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Grayish-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Smooth and later becoming scaly and rough. Up to 5 inches in diameter.
