Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Size depends on available moisture. New stems are slender and plum colored. When small forms dense mounds. Larger forms tend to be more open and arching.
Height: 6 feet     Width: 6 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 2500 - 7500 feet

Similar Species: Rhus aromatica


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Inconspicuous in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Jun
Description: Yellow appearing before leaves, to 3/4 inch wide in dense cluster on spike.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Compound   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Dark green, shiny, compound with 3 oval, lobed leaflets to 1-1/4 inches long. Foliage will release pungent resinous terpenes on being crushed or rubbed against.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Orange-red   Type: Berry-like   Description: Cluster of sticky, bright, orange-red berries.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray-brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Smooth   Bark and Branch Description: Smooth with few shallow fissures and splits with age.
