Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. Largest of the willows with a broad, rounded crown and a massive trunk to 30 inches in diameter. Prefers wet soils of streams, lakes and flood plains and often found in pure stands with cottonwoods. Has a deep root system that prevents stream erosion.
Height: 45 to 100 feet     Width: 40 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: Green   Shape: Inconspicuous in elongated clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar
Description: Tiny and in catkins to 3-1/2 inches long with yellow hairy scales at the end of leafy twigs.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green or yellowish-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Shiny green above, paler beneath and hairless. 5 inches long by 3/4 inch wide but broadest at base. Narrowly lance-shaped, long pointed and fine toothed with a slight curve on one side.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Reddish-brown   Type: Capsule   Description: Cone shaped capsules and hairless with many cottony seeds. Matures in late spring.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Brown to gray or gray-black   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Thick, rough and deeply furrowed with narrow ridges. Twigs are brownish, slender and easily detached.
