Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. A low growing, erect and sometimes trailing mountain shrub, with spreading to arching branches. Occurs on the edges of riparian zones, in woodlands and in moist areas of the mountain brush zone.
Height: 3.5 feet     Width: 4 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 4000 - 10000 feet

Similar Species: Symphoricarpos oreophilus


Flower Characteristics

Color: Pink   Shape: Regular in clusters     Tubular: Y   Flowering Period: May - Jun
Description: Slender, lobed at the tip to 1/2 inch long and in clusters of up to 6 in leaf axils.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Gray-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Opposite   Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves
Description: Gray-green above with paler below. Has prominent veins, thick and oval to 1-1/2 inches long by 3/4 inch wide and finely haired.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: White   Type: Berry-like   Description: 1/2 inch in diameter. Remain on plant most of the winter.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Slender, brown fuzzy-hairy twigs turn gray and become shreddy with age.
