Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Highly branched rounded shrub with spreading or ascending branches and woody base. Resembles sagebrush. Found along roadsides, clearings in ponderosa forests, and dry, sandy and rocky woodlands soils. Will drop its leaves in periods of water stress.
Height: 2 feet     Width: 5 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 5000 - 8000 feet

Similar Species: Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow   Shape: Daisy or Dandelion-like in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Jun - Oct
Description: Flowers bright yellow to cream, with pale lemon color being most common. No petals with 4 disk flowers per head and 4 to 6 wooly bracts surrounding the head to 5/8 inch long in terminal clusters. Flowers similar to rabbitbrush flowers but larger.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Gray-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Narrow   Margin: Smooth   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves
Description: Woolly and narrow to 1/2 inch long growing along the entire stem. The margins are entire and the leaf has a prominent midvein. New leaves have a silvery appearance.

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Brown   Type: Other   Description: Fruit is a densely silky achene with tan bristles to 3/4 inch long.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Grayish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Stems are erect, short and stout. New growth is densely silvery hairy. Older bark is gray and shreddy. Old leaf bud scars appear swollen, giving the a knobby appearance.
