Plant Description

Origin: Introduced
General Description: Deciduous. An introduced fast growing tree up to 60 feet. The crown is open and rounded with slender, spreading, brittle branches. Seeds prolifically and generally considered invasive. Can form dense thickets that close open areas and displace native vegetation.
Height: 60 feet     Width: 40 feet


Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 1000 - 5000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Green   Shape: Inconspicuous in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Apr
Description: Monoecious. Petalless, to 1/8 inch wide, pale green clusters appear in early spring before leaves develop.


Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Elliptical, slightly thickened, blunt-based and saw toothed with many straight side veins. 1 to 2-1/2 inches long. Dark green and smooth above, paler below.
Spines: N


Fruit Characteristics

Color: Pale green to light brown   Type: Winged   Description: Thin, flat, wafer-like samara. Roundish, with notch at top. 1/2 inch in diameter. Initially pale green but later turning light brown when ripe in the spring.


Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Gray or brown   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Irregularly furrowed and rough. Often streaked with light bleeding stains caused by bacteria.
