Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Deciduous. A medium to large, rigidly, spiny, branched shrub. Has many, long stout thorns with one or more small leaf nodes. Deciduous with drought or frost.

Elevation: 1000 - 5000 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: Whitish-green or whitish-yellow   Shape: Inconspicuous in clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: May - Sep
Description: Very small to 1/8 inch long in a stalked cluster.

Leaf Characteristics

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or Oval   Margin: Lobed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves
Description: Oblong with fine hairs to 3/4 inch long by 3/8 inch wide.
Spines: Y

Fruit Characteristics

Color: Blue-black   Type: Berry-like   Description: Oval-shaped, 1/2 inch long by 1/4 inch wide with one hard seed. Quail and doves eat the fruits.

Bark Characteristics

Bark Color: Light Gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Bark interrupted by fine, lengthwise cracks resulting from radial growth. Gray-green, wax covered stems, ending in spines, conduct photosynthesis.
