Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: A spike of showy, reddish-orange flowers (bracts) top the leafy stems. Wholeleaf Indian Paintbrush obtains some of its nutrients by penetrating the roots of nearby plants, most often grasses.
Height: To 16 inches


Habitat Description: Arid foothills, plains and mesas.
Plant Communities: Desert Scrub, Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3000 - 7500 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: The bracts are reddish-orange and the flowers are green.     Shape: Irregular in elongated clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Mar - Sep
Description: The showy reddish-orange parts of the flowers are actually bracts (modified leaves) and the greenish, tinged scarlet, tubular true flowers are inconspicuously hidden among the bracts.
