Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: Upright or trailing, vine-like plant has conspicuous bright yellow flowers; is a favored browse for deer and domestic livestock.
Height: 8 to 16 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Oak/pinon pine/juniper woods, riparian deciduous montane at 4500 to 9000 feet; among ponderosa pines, streams, canyons, meadows.
Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 4500 - 9000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow or orange or red     Shape: Irregular in elongated clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Apr - Sep
Description: Pea-like yellow flower, 1/2 inch long, turning orange or red; upper petal is rust colored below and flares backward.

Leaf Color: Dark green     Leaf Type: Compound     Leaf Shape: Narrow     Leaf Margin: Smooth     Leaf Attachment: Alternate     Leaves Clasp: N
Hairs: Leaves     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Leaves are divided into 3 to 5 oblong narrow leaflets of differing sizes from 1/4 to 1/2 inch long; trailing, reclining stem; leaves turn red in autumn.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: greenish red   
Fruit Type: Pod
Fruit Notes: Bean-like pod, turning brown; 5/8 to 1 inch long slender and flattened pod.
