Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Annual
General Desc: A small annual with erect but slender stems that repeatly fork into pairs.
Identification notes: Small annual, flower parts in 5, united (funnelform), bisexual and in angles of branches, hairy.
Height: 5 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found mainly in Coconino County in our area but documented in Yavapai County in Bradshaw mountains.
Plant Communities: Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 5500 - 7000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Purple     Shape: Regular in clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Aug - Sep
Description: Corolla (petals) only slightly exceeds the calyx (sepals). Has 5 united petals. Inflorescence of a few flowers opens from the center of terminal ends outward.


Leaf and Stem Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green     Leaf Type: Simple     Leaf Shape: Narrow     Leaf Margin: Smooth     Leaf Attachment: Opposite     Leaves Clasp: N
Hairs: Leaves and stems     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Leaves are up to 1/2 inch long and less than 1/4 inch wide. Leaves can be clustered at the terminal ends of stems.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Seed Notes: Seeds are deeply and regularly pitted with a honeycomb structure separated by thin partitions.
