Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Biennial or perennial
General Desc: A tall, erect, usually unbranched stem with large, showy, yellow flowers clustered along the stem. The plant forms a basal rosette of leaves the first year. It sends up a long leafy stem and blooms during the second year.
Height: To 3 feet


Habitat Description: Open slopes, road banks, and grassy areas from the plains well into the mountains.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian, Disturbed Areas
Elevation: 3500 - 9500 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow     Shape: Regular in elongated clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Jul - Oct
Description: Yellow flowers are to 3 inches wide and consist of four broad, heart-shaped yellow petals. Flowers open in the late afternoon, becoming pink to orange the following day and closing by noon.

Fruit Notes: Slender, rigid pods are to 2 inches long. They start out green, turning to tan.
Seed Notes: Seeds are pitted.
