Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Annual
General Desc: A soft-haired plant with several stems and mostly basal leaves, each topped with 1 small, bowl-shaped flower resembling a pale yellow or cream buttercup.
Height: 6 to 12 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Open grasslands, slopes, hillsides, and along washes and streams.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Riparian
Elevation: 1500 - 4500 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Pale yellow to white     Shape: Regular not in clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Mar - May
Description: Flowers solitary, terminal, normally 6 petals, sometimes more, to 1 inch wide. The delicate, cream-colored, solitary flowers of this 6 - 12 inch annual are followed by a fruit which has been compared to tiny ears of corn.


Leaf and Stem Characteristics

Leaf Color: Grayish-green     Leaf Type: Simple     Leaf Shape: Narrow     Leaf Margin: Lobed     Leaf Attachment: Basal     Leaves Clasp: Y
Hairs: Leaves and stems     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Leaves are deeply lobed, clasp the stem, are 1/2 to 3-1/2 inches long and hairy with prickles on veins and margins.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: Green   
Fruit Type: Capsule
Fruit Notes: Cylindrical capsule 2/3 inch long, turns brown. Sometimes compared to tiny ears of corn with the husks removed. The ovary separates into many sections when fruit forms.
Seed Notes: Black seeds.
