General Description

Desc: Often a darker green when growing than pine dropseed and darker golden color when cured. Seeds are larger than pine dropseed.

Leaf Arrangement: Leaves basal and erect  Large Dense Clump (> 2 feet): N  Bushy (highly branched): N

Flower Characteristics

Number of Flowers per Spikelet: One-flowered  Spikelet Arrangement: Scattered on branches

Flower and Seedhead Notes: Seedhead 5-20 cm long, narrow but not spikelike. Branches naked at the base, 6 mm long, bluish green or brownish-leaden at maturity. 2nd glume as long as the spikelet.

Blade Notes: Blades 3-16 inches long 1-2.5 mm wide often thinly soft-hairy with long hairs.

Vegetative Notes: Culms densely tufted, erect, often hairy on lower portion. Ligule densely fringed with hairs on the margin.
